Are you thinking about adding a deck to your home? Our team of deck builders can take on any project, big or small. Xterior LLC has over 45 years of combined experience with exterior home projects. We offer decks in a variety of materials, and we can build a custom deck
to perfectly complement your home and yard.
Creating an Outdoor Living Space with a New Deck
Some people think of their deck simply as a place to grill in the summer. The right deck, though, can truly be an extension of your home. This is one of the biggest benefits to adding a deck, but some people don’t even realize it!
When designing a custom deck for our clients, we first ask you to think about how you intend to use it. Let’s start with a space for grilling, which many people want. Have you also considered how a deck can be a full outdoor kitchen? We can add a space not only for your grill, but also countertops or even a sink. You can even dream big and build in features like pizza ovens and covered stove tops.
Even if you just want a simple platform for a small grill, we can help you envision a layout that makes sense. Will you have outdoor seating, such as a patio dining table, for example? What location makes the most sense for a grill in relation to the door.
Think of your new deck as a place to relax as well, much like your living room. We can add built-in seating or help you plan the best design for patio furniture. You can even add a television or projector screen as well.
We also encourage you to think about how you will use your deck for entertaining. An extra outdoor living space is helpful for large parties. We’ll help you think about how the deck flows into your home and out to your yard.
Other Deck Benefits
Did you know there are even more benefits to working with professional deck builders for an outdoor living addition? Most importantly, adding a custom deck will add value to your home.
The Remodeling magazine’s 2019 Cost vs. Value Report
looked at common home improvements and the return on investment you can expect. They found that a deck with a railing and benches is one of the top five home improvement projects you can do to add value to your largest investment – your home. It was only behind garage door replacement, adding a stone veneer, and minor kitchen remodels. It was tied with siding replacement
, which is something else we can help you do to add value to your home.
Along with helping you get more money when you sell, a deck can also help you sell faster. Often, people are looking for an outdoor space, so they won’t even consider homes unless they have a deck or patio. A custom deck can help your home stand apart.
If you don’t intend to sell your home anytime soon, a custom deck can still be a financial benefit. By adding value to your home, you have more equity. You can tap into this equity in the future. In other words, if you ever need a home equity loan or line of credit, you’ll typically qualify for more because your home will appraise higher with a deck.
Decking Materials – Which is Better?
At Xterior LLC, we offer two types of decks. Many homeowners like a traditional wood deck. However, we also offer composite decking options. Regardless of the deck size or design, wood and composite are both available.
A wood deck’s main advantage is the cost. Typically, wood costs about half as much, although during the pandemic, the cost of wood is rising, but your material cost may still be lower with wood. Keep in mind that this only takes into account the upfront cost of your deck. Over time, wood is much more expensive and time-consuming to maintain. That said, wood is a beautiful look for many homes. It is a more traditional aesthetic and you can easily stain or paint it to change the appearance. The downside is that you must spend time and money maintaining wood, which adds to the long-term cost. We offer our homeowners more standard wood options, such as pine, as well as exotic hardwood options.
With a composite deck, you don’t have to worry about warping, insects, splinters, scratches, and fading. You also don’t have to refinish composite decking every 2-5 years. With a wood deck, you have to sand, stain or paint, and reseal your deck in order to keep it looking great. Composite simply needs periodic cleaning according to manufacturer’s instructions. That said, some people don’t like the look of composite and instead prefer wood. It is really a matter of personal taste.
Ultimately, regardless of whether you choose wood or composite decking, we are going to create a gorgeous deck for your home. If you love the look of wood and don’t mind the maintenance, this is a great budget-friendly option. On the other hand, if you have a larger budget and want to save money and time over the course of the years, composite is the way to go.
The Best Deck Features and Upgrades
Yes, you can build a simple rectangular deck to expand your outdoor living space. That said, we can also help you create a custom deck with special features to help you enjoy your yard even more. In the current social distancing climate, spending time outdoors is becoming a more popular way of entertaining. Here are some top deck features we recommend:
- Deck Railing and Stairs: We can build decks with multiple levels to enhance the natural beauty of your backyard. Not only is this visually eye-pleasing, but it can be the safer option as well, providing an easy, safe access point to your ground level.
- Pergola – Your new deck can benefit from a pergola is you want a little extra protection from the sun. A beautiful wood or vinyl pergola can also work great for climbing plants.
- Built-in Benches – By adding benches, you have a place to sit without the need for patio furniture. Benches also serve double-duty as a place for plants when you are not sitting on them.
- Fire Pit – We can build your deck to surround a fire pit or other feature. Imagine relaxing by a cozy fire on a cool spring or fall night, complete with built-in seating.
No matter what you want most in a deck, we can turn your dream into a reality. We can even build a deck connected to a pool, hot tub, porch, or sunroom. Our deck building team can speak with you about your options, so we can design the perfect new deck for your family and budget.
We Can Help You Build a Deck for All Seasons
Some homeowners think of decks as a home feature they’ll only use in the summer. However, we want to build a deck that you’ll use all year long. Of course, you can do some epic grilling during the summer, but with a well-planned deck, you can enjoy time outside in the spring and fall as well. You can even enjoy your deck during the winter, since we are lucky in North Carolina to have mild winters with some sunny, cool days.
First, if you want to enjoy your deck all year long, we recommend composite decking. Composite materials look better all year long, and resist staining and dirt. You can enjoy your wood deck all year too, but it might be a nicer experience if your deck is composite.
Next, we have to talk about heating and cooling. You’ll have a better experience with your new deck if you can keep it at a comfortable temperature. In the late fall, winter, and early spring, you’ll want a heat source. You can include fire pits, outdoor fireplaces, chimineas, and strip heaters. In the height of summer, you’ll want to stay cool. You can enclose part of your deck or provide shade with a pergola or awning to achieve this.
To enjoy your deck all year, you should also consider weatherproof outdoor furniture. There are some companies that offer beautiful and affordable furniture that makes it easier to enjoy your deck even in the winter.
If you’re hoping to use your deck all year, mention this to our team. Your deck designer will take this into account when designing the perfect deck for you.
The Cost of Your New Deck
The price of your new deck depends heavily on a number of factors:
- Do you want composite decking or wood?
- How big do you want your deck to be?
- Are there deck installation issues, such as steep landscaping that we will have to grade before we can start building?
- Do you want special features or a simple deck?
When you work with Xterior LLC, you never have to wonder what your final deck price will be. Before we start, we’ll give you a free consultation. This includes a full price quote based on your specific vision for your deck.
Our price quotes are contracts. At the end of the project, you won’t get a surprise bill. Some deck contractor teams will invent new ways to raise the price. You might end up paying hundreds or even thousands of dollars more than you expected. Our promise to you is that we’ll stick to your budget, as outlined in the price quote. You deserve to know how much you’ll pay before we start building.
Financing for Your New Deck
Regardless of the cost of your deck project, keep in mind that we provide financing. With financing, qualified homeowners can get a new deck with no down payment. We offer low monthly payments and low interest rates to qualified buyers. Our custom deck builder team will help process your approval quickly so we can begin your project without delay.
Our financing plans
are also great for all the different home improvement projects we take on, including shingle roof replacement, metal roof replacement, vinyl siding replacement, windows and more. We’re also experienced speaking to homeowners’ insurance companies. In many cases, especially if there was a storm, fire, or other disaster, your insurance may cover your new roof or siding completely.
How to Hire Top Deck Builders
If you need to hire a deck contractor, there are a few things you should keep in mind to ensure you get the results you want. Here are questions you should ask any contractor before hiring them for deck design and deck installation:
- “Do you have experience with exterior home renovations?” Some contractors have decades of experience, but have mainly done interior work. Here at Xterior LLC, we specialize in exterior renovations.
- “Please may I see your proof of current insurance?” Never work with deck builders who are not willing to show you their insurance information. This protects you as much as they protect the business owner.
- “May I see pictures of your previous work?” Look for examples of deck installation projects the company has done in the past, like the ones we have available here.
Last but not least, look for a deck builder you can trust. Some companies have very few reviews online. Here at Xterior LLC, we post reviews from real customers
. We hope you value learning from their experiences with Xterior LLC.
